Shatter Me
We are a product of what has been. We uphold tradition because it makes us strong, but sometimes old traditions must find ways to coexist with new ideas. This show tells the story of a ballerina, who has been held to a strict classical training her whole life. But she can’t help wonder, what would it be like to do something different? The title Shatter Me, depicts the ballerina shattering the glass of tradition, trying new things and feeling alive in a whole new way. This show opens with a music box and Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, portraying the traditional world of classical ballet. The second part of the show, “Man in the Mirror” is introspective. As we break away from the classical tone of the opening we begin asking questions like who am I? Am I happy? What else am I capable of?. The final movement of the show begins similarly to the opening, but then kicks into a driving saxophone solo and contemporary pop music. The character has broken free and is now dancing in a new edgier style, but it is their old ballet training that ultimately allows them to succeed in this new style of dance. The conclusion of this show drives home that while we are a product of what has come before, we all must use that knowledge to forge our own path forward.
